Everyoneâs looking to save money and get the most bang for their buck. This series shows you where you can save while still savoring a good meal.
Massive sushi rolls for less than $20 each? That sounds too good to be true.
I have to admit, Iâm slightly conflicted while writing this ⊠simply because one of my favorite spots in Central OÊ»ahu will now potentially be busier.

Tucked away on the second floor of âAiea Shopping Center is Makoto Sushi. The business isnât new â itâs been around for about 16 years â and neither are its large sushi rolls. Itâs one of those âif you know, you knowâ places. This spot has satisfied my sushi craving ever since I started going there in 2015; its menu and prices have been consistent. Â
The menu can be overwhelming, as there are 30-plus sushi rolls to choose from. If you have a chance to look at it online before your visit, though, that might make decision-making slightly easier. Most plates range from $14 to $17; choose from a variety of tempura, spicy and specialty rolls.
Makoto Sushi is more of a grab-and-go spot, but there are a few tables directly outside of the business where customers can enjoy their sushi.

The tempura crunch roll ($13.95) is one of the most popular orders and features shrimp tempura, a crunchy topping and masago on top. If youâre looking for something with a lot of crunchy textures, this fits the bill. Imitation crab and shrimp tempura comprise the filling. Regardless of what I order, Iâm always pleased with the filling-to-rice ratio, since the filling portion is always generous.

Located under the âspicy loversâ category, the 911 roll ($15.95) is one of my favorites. This roll is stuffed with spicy âahi and topped with avocado slices and a chili sauce drizzle. It packs some heat â which builds as you eat more of the roll â but you canât beat that abundant spicy âahi filling.Â
If you want a roll with lots of fresh fish, the gold fish roll ($17.95) is highly recommended. This is one of the most expensive options, but it includes a mix of spicy âahi, imitation crab and ebi, with fresh ahi, salmon and unagi on top.
Definitely not a bad way to treat yourself (without feeling guilty for breaking the bank on sushi).
