Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to star in possible Martin Scorsese movie about a Hawaiʻi mob boss?

Mainland news groups have reported a possible new crime movie set in Hawaiʻi and starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt. The film, directed by Martin Scorsese, is currently being pitched, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The proposed film tells the story of a crime boss — based on a real figure — and combines Scorsese’s ʻGodfellas’ and ‘The Departed’ with the story of a mob boss vying for control in the 1960s and 1970s, according to Deadline.

In the reporting so far, no one is named as a source for the information about the film.

Aloha State Daily reached out to Johnson’s talent agency, the state film office, and the state Creative Industries Division in the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism for additional information. 

Recently, Johnson has been part of WWE NXT and WWE Raw. He was the voice of Maui in the animated movie, “Moana 2,” which was released in November 2024, and played Callum Drift in the Christmas movie, “Red One,” according to IMDB. 

Should the film come to pass, it would be familiar territory for Scorsese, known for sprawling crime sagas from "Goodfellas" (1990) and "Casino" (1995) to "Killers of the Flower Moon" (2023). “Killers of the Flower Moon” had a budget of $200 million, as reported previously by Variety, and was shot on location in Oklahoma, where the story took place, over six months in 2021.
